Black Nazarene procession winds through Manila

Every year on Jan. 9, millions of Filipinos join an annual procession following the image of the Black Nazarene in the streets of Manila.

The religious activity, which can last up to 24 hours, marks the solemn transfer, or traslacion, of the image from a chapel in the old walled city to a church in the city's central district.

Days before the procession, devotees start arriving outside the church in Manila's Quiapo district for them to be blessed by priests who stand atop a bridge and sprinkle holy water on them and their replicas of the Black Nazarene image.
