A serving of kindness for Hong Kong's 'McRefugees'

So-called McRefugees or McSleepers are those down on their luck who spend their night in 24-hour McDonald's restaurants in several Hong Kong districts.

Catholic group MercyHK have been providing a decent meal for some of the McRefugees each Thursday night in Hong Kong's Temple Street in Yaumatei.

MercyHK which was founded Father John Wotherspoon of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate with laypeople Tony Chan and Lucia Leung.

Father Wotherspoon first met some of the McRefugees in 2016 and sought to offer them support.

"He learned that some of them lived in sub-divided flats and some were homeless," said Chan. "Their lives were very difficult he thought of inviting them to have a free meal every week, hoping to give them support and care."

The meal has been nicknamed the "McMercy dinner" and around 12 people attend each time.
