Religious violence hits Sri Lanka

The Sri Lankan government declared a nationwide state of emergency on March 6 for 10 days after religious violence in Kandy.

The government is appointing a three-member commission to investigate attacks on Muslims by Buddhist mobs in the area.

According to local police, 465 houses, vehicles and businesses were destroyed or damaged in the religious-linked violence in Kandy district.

Many residents told ucanews.com that Muslim-owned businesses, houses and vehicles were set on fire in recent days despite a heavy military and police presence.

The attacks follow similar anti-Muslim violence that earlier erupted in the east of the country.
