Hmong rice farmers in Vietnam

The Hmong ethnic group have famously cultivated rice on terraced hillsides for centuries in Mu Cang Chai district Vietnam. Hmong people account for over 90 percent of the district's population of 56,000.

Some 3,500 hectares of terraced rice fields around hills cultivated by the Hmong people turn yellow during harvest time, adding considerably to the beauty of the area. Since 2007 this has been recognized as a national tourist attraction.

Hmong farmers traditionally depend on the natural environment to grow one rice crop per year.

There are 60 Catholics including 10 Hmong who live their faith secretly because the communist government views this district as having no religion. Priests from other places are banned from visiting local people.
