Cardinal Fernando Filoni, the prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelisation of Peoples, visited Thailand to help celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Church's mission to Siam.
As part of his visit, Cardinal Filoni went to a memorial shrine just outside Bangkok dedicated to Blessed Nicholas Bunkerd Kitbamrung, one of Thailand’s martyrs. He also travelled to the country’s north which has the Chiang Mai Diocese and the newly formed diocese of Chiang Rai.
The cardinal’s last day in Thailand will be spent at the Ayutthaya — which is considered the cradle of Thai Christianity — on May 21.
There are more than 300,000 Catholics spread across 12 dioceses with 436 parishes and 662 priests in Thailand.
