Monsoon rains cause widespread flooding in Manila

More than a million people in the Philippine capital Manila and nearby provinces have been affected by floods caused by continuous southwest monsoon rains in recent days.

About 60,000 people were forced to flee to temporary shelters after flood waters inundated homes and whole communities in the outskirts of Manila.

The government's disaster response office reported that a total of 51 houses were destroyed and 3,127 others were damaged in Ilocos and central Luzon regions north of Manila.

While flooding in Manila has already subsided, clearing operations continue in many hard hit communities because of mud that was brought by the waters.

At the height of the flooding, several Catholic churches in Manila were opened to accommodate thousands of displaced people.
