Bishop Stephen Athipozhyil was born on May 18, 1944, in Allepey diocese, Kerala state. He completed high school studies in 1960 and joined the diocese's Sacred Heart Minor Seminary in June of that year.

After being sent to study to the Papal Seminary in Pune to study philosophy and theology, he was ordained a priest at Mount Carmel Cathedral, by Bishop Michael Arattukulam of Alleppey. He served as prefect of the diocesan minor seminary and as parish priest in Omanappuzha.

After earning an M.A.in philosophy from University College, Trivandrum, in 1982, he was appointed Rector of the minor seminary, Principal of Leo XIII English Primary School and Manager of Leo XIII High School. Then he was appointed to the teaching staff of St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye.

He also served the diocese as Diocesan Consultor and also as Executive Director of the diocese's social welfare society. He was appointed coadjutor bishop with right of succession on Nov. 16, 2000. His consecration took place on Feb. 11, 2001, and he succeeded Bishop Peter M. Chenaparampil on Dec. 9, 2001 as Bishop of Alleppey.

Bishop Athipozhyil is a member of the Justice, Peace and Development Commission of the Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC), chairman of the KCBC Commission for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Backward ommunities and Vice Chairman of the KCBC Charismatic Commission.

On 11 Oct 2019 he Retired.

Most Rev. Stephen Athipozhiyil Bishop Emeritus of Alleppey passes away due to cardiac arrest on 9 April, 2022.
