Cardinal Archbishop Jean Baptiste Pham Minh Man was born on March 5, 1934 at Hoa Thanh village in the southernmost Ca Mau province. He studied at a local minor seminary in 1944-1946 and another minor seminary in Phnom Penh (Cambodia) in 1946-1954. He studied philosophy at Saint Joseph Major Seminary in Saigon (now Ho Chi Minh City) from 1954-1956 before he taught at a school in the southern Bac Lieu province until 1961. Then he returned to study theology at the major seminary from 1961-1965 and was ordained a priest for Can Tho diocese on May 25 that year. He taught at a local minor seminary until 1968, when he was sent to study administration and education at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, the U.S.. After having returned to Vietnam in 1971, he taught at local seminaries and served as rector of Saint Quy Major Seminary based in Can Tho city from 1988 to 1993. He was ordained coadjutor bishop of the neighboring My Tho diocese on Aug. 11, 1993. Five years later, Bishop Man became Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City on April 2, 1998. Pope John Paul II elevated him to the rank of cardinal on Oct. 21, 2003.
