Bishop Thomas Nguyen Van Tram was born on Jan. 9, 1942 in Ba Ria town. After finishing his philosophical and theological studies at Saint Joseph Seminary in Sai Gon (now Ho Chi Minh City), he was ordained a priest for Xuan Loc diocese on May 1, 1969. Father Tram furthered his studies at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome and obtained a doctorate in canon law. After returned home, he worked at the Xuan Loc Bishop's House, gave pastoral care to parishes and taught at Saint Joseph Major Seminary in Ho Chi Minh City until he was named auxiliary bishop of Xuan Loc on March 6, 1992. His episcopal ordination was on May 7 that year. His epicopal motto is Gentle and Humble.

Bishop Tram was appointed as the first bishop of the country's youngest Ba Ria diocese on Dec. 5, 2005.

He speaks English, French and Italian, except his native Vietnamese language.

He retired on May 6, 2017.
