Bishop Sotero Phamo, the first among the nine children of Luigi and Lemaou from Kayaw tribe was born on Nov. 23, 1943 in the small village of Hoya, Phruso Township, Kayah state, Myanmar.
He was educated at Hoyah Elementary School, Pekhon Middle School, Taunggyi High School, St. Teresa Seminary and Yangon University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology. He completed his studies of philosophy and theology at St. Joseph's Major Seminary, Yangon.
He was ordained a priest by Bishop J.B. Gobatto on March 18, 1972. After serving the Church for 17 years as a priest he was appointed the first Bishop of Loikaw Diocese by Pope John Paul II and consecrated bishop by Bishop J.B. Gobatto on April 22, 1989. While serving the Diocese of Loikaw, he was appointed as the Diocesan Administrator of Yangon Archdiocese from Sept. 30, 2002 to May 24, 2003, when he resigned from that post.
Since his ordination he held the following appointments: Assistant Parish Priest of Han O (1972-73); Director of Moso Institute for Catechists (1973-75); Professor at St. Joseph's Seminary, Yangon (1975-80); Parish Priest of Hoya (1980-84); Rector of St. Teresa Seminary, Taunggyi (1984-87); Parish Priest of Loikaw (1987-88); Sept. 2002 - May 2003: Apostolic Administrator of Yangon Archdiocese.
