The last ordinary of the diocese was Bishop Peter Paul Li Panshi. The prelate died on Jan. 4, 2007, at the age of 95 in a hospital in Zhongshan city, Guangdong province.
According to the obituary prepared by the diocese, Bishop Li was born on June 12, 1911, in Guangdong. In 1922, he entered the seminary in Macau, which borders Guangdong. After his priestly ordination in July 1944, he preached in Zhongshan.
Following the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, then-Father Li earned a living by growing bananas and raising rabbits, but he continued preaching in the area.
During the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), he was sent back to his native town to be a farmer. After religious activities were allowed to resume in the late 1970s, Bishop Li returned to serve in Zhongshan. In 1981, he was ordained bishop of Jiangmen. The bishop had lived at Immaculate Conception Church in Zhongshan since his episcopal ordination, despite the cathedral being located in Jiangmen city, 36 kilometers west of Zhongshan. The Vatican-approved and Chinese government-recognized bishop served the diocese until his death.
