Bishop Paul Nguyen Van Hoa was born on Feb. 2, 1932, at Boi Kenh village in the northern province of Ha Nam. After he finished his studies at Pius XII Minor Seminary in Ha Dong, he fled to the south during the 1954 exodus and studied at Xuan Bich Major Seminary in the southern province of Vinh Long. From 1956 -1963 he studied in Propaganda Fide Major Seminary and University in Rome where he obtained a doctoral degree in theology. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 20, 1959. He also graduated at the Pontifical Institute on Sacred Music. After he returned to Vietnam, he served in the diocese of Da Lat. In 1968 he worked at the newly-founded diocese of Ban Me Thuot until he was appointed bishop of Phan Thiet diocese Jan. 30, 1975. His episcopal ordination was on April 5 that year in Ban Me Thuot. But later he was appointed Bishop of Nha Trang on April 24, 1975, due to the country's political changes in 1975.

Bishop Hoa, who is known to be a calm and gentle Church leader, is former head of the Vietnam Bishops' Conference from 2001-2007. He also serves as head of the Episcopal Commission for Sacred Music.
