Bishop Joseph Fan Zhongliang, S.J. was born in 1918. He was ordained a priest in 1951. He is not affiliated to the government-sanctioned open Church. He leads the underground Church in Shanghai, and is reportedly suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Bishop Fan was in jail and labor camp for over 30 years since the 1950s.
After being released in 1985, he was clandestinely ordained coadjutor bishop of Shanghai and led the Catholic community in the underground Church while Bishop Ignatius Kung Pin-mei (Gong Pinmei) of Shanghai remained under arrest. Bishop Kung went in exile in the United States and died there in March 2000. Pope John Paul II made Bishop Kung a cardinal "in pectore" in 1979, and bestowed him in 1988.
Bishop Fan's movements are restricted. He died in 2014.
