Bishop John Baptist Bui Tuan was born on on June 24, 1928 in the northern Thai Binh diocese. After he finished his studies of philosophy and theology at local seminaries, he went for further studies at Rosary Hill Major Seminary in Hong Kong in 1954. He was ordained a priest there on July 2, 1955 and continued his studies in Germany, Italy and Switzerland. Since 1962 Father Tuan worked at diocesan seminaries before he was named as coadjutor bishop of Long Xuyen diocese on April 17, 1975. His Episcopal ordination took place on April 30, 1975, when communist troops took control of Sai Gon (now Ho Chi Minh City) and brought the Vietnam War to an end.
Bishop Tuan became bishop of the diocese on Dec. 22, 1997 and retired six years later.
