Auxiliary Bishop John Baptist Tseng Chien-tsi, the first aboriginal bishop in Taiwan, was born on Dec. 11, 1942 in Tainan, Taiwan. He was ordained a priest on March 21, 1972 in Taitung. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Hualien by Pope John Paul II on June 24, 1998 and consecrated on Aug. 29, 1998 in Taitung. The appointment shows "respect and concern" for aborigines and will help the development of aboriginal Catholic communities and minority culture, Father Valerian Chen Hsin-hua of Hualien, an ethnic Ami, told UCA News in 1998 when Bishop Tseng was named as the auxiliary bishop by the pope. He has been preserving and promoting the ethnic culture through his writing and editing works on Puyuma language, literature and culture. Bishop Tseng is the chairperson of the Indigenous Commission of the Episcopal Conference.
