Bishop Pierre Tran Dinh Tu was born on March 2, 1937 in the northern province of Thai Binh. He entered local My Duc minor seminary in 1948. He studied philosophy in Hong Kong from 1954-1957. After returning to Vietnam, he studied theology at Saint Joseph Major Seminary in Sai Gon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in 1961-1965.

He was ordained a priest on April 29, 1965 and served at parishes in Phu Cuong diocese till 1968, when he started to further his studies in Rome. He obtained a doctorate in canon law and bachelor's degree in liturgy.

After he returned home in 1973, he served as rector of a local minor seminary and taught at Saint Joseph Major Seminary in Ho Chi Minh City. He also served as pastor of the local Cathedral until 1998, when he was named Bishop of Phu Cuong on Nov. 5 that year. His episcopal ordination was held on Jan. 6, 1999 in Rome by Pope John Paul II. On July 2, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the diocese of Quy Nhon, Vietnam, presented by Bishop Pierre Nguyen Soan, upon having reached the age limit.
