Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian, S.J. was born in 1916, in Chuansha county, Shanghai. He was ordained as a Jesuit priest in 1945.

Two years later, he left for studies in France, Germany and Italy and earned a doctorate in theology. He returned to Shanghai and served for four years as rector of what was then known as the Xuhui Regional Seminary.

He was arrested in 1955 because, he has said, he "opposed several laws of the state." He spent 18 years in prison. At that time, many priests were imprisoned for "counter-revolutionary activities."

After his release, then Father Jin worked in north China for almost 10 years. He then returned to Shanghai in 1982, where he has since served as rector of the same seminary, which was relocated outside Shanghai City and renamed Sheshan Regional Seminary. Father Jin had been consecrated without the papal mandate as Auxiliary Bishop of Shanghai in January 1985, and and became Bishop of Shanghai in 1989. Later, in the 2000s, Bishop Jin was recognized by the Holy See as a coadjutor

He died on April 26, 2013.
