Bishop Peter Nguyen Van Kham was born on Oct. 2, 1952 in Ha Dong, northern Vietnam.

He and his family fled south in the 1954 exodus after northern communists defeated colonial French forces. He studied at seminaries in Can Tho, Long Xuyen and Ho Chi Minh City from 1963 to 1979 before he was ordained a priest for Ho Chi Minh City archdiocese on Aug. 30, 1980.

Father Kham served as assistant priest at three local parishes and taught at Saint Joseph Major Seminary based in Ho Chi Minh City until 1999. He furthered his studies 2000-2004 at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and earned a doctorate in pastoral theology.

After returning to Vietnam, he served as director of the archdiocesan Pastoral Center, secretary general of the Episcopal Commission for the Doctrine of the Faith and secretary of the Vietnam Bishops' Conference. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him auxiliary bishop on Oct. 15, 2008. His episcopal ordination was on Nov. 15 that year.

He serves as deputy secretary general of the Vietnam Bishops' Conference.

In addition to his native language, Bishop Kham speaks French and English.
