Bishop Paul Bui Van Doc was born on Nov. 11, 1944 in Da Lat city in the Central Highlands. After he studied at a seminary in Sai Gon (now Ho Chi Minh City) in 1956-1963, he furthered his philosophical and theological studies at the Pontifical Urbaniana University in Rome in 1964-1970. He was ordained a priest on Dec. 17, 1970 in Da Lat.

He served as rector of Minh Hoa Major Seminary from 1975 until he became vicar general of Da Lat diocese in 1995.

He was named bishop of My Tho on March 26, 1999 by the late Pope John Paul II. His Episcopal ordination was on May 20 that year.

He was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh on Sep 28, 2013.

On March 22, 2014, Pope Francis accepted the resignation of Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man, upon he reaching the age limit. Bishop Paul Bui Van Doc, coadjutor of the same archdiocese, succeeded him.
