Archbishop Francis Xavier Le Van Hong was born on June 30, 1940 at Tri Buu village in Quang Tri province. After he finished his theological and philosophical studies in Pius X Pontifical College in Da Lat, he was ordained a priest for Hue Archdiocese on Dec. 21, 1969. He taught at Hoan Thien minor seminary and served as chaplain and parish priest until 1999, when he was sent to France for his further studies. After he returned to Vietnam in 2002, he gave pastoral activities for a parish until he was named auxiliary bishop of Hue on Feb. 19, 2005. His Episcopal ordination was on April 7 that year. On Aug. 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him metropolitan archbishop of Hue Archdiocese, succeeding Archbishop Etienne Nguyen Nhu The, whose resignation from the pastoral care of the same archdiocese the pope accepted, upon having reached the age limit. He retired on Oct. 29, 2016.
