Malaysian Church’s unforgettable French missionary legacy

Archdiocese of Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Church’s unforgettable French missionary legacy

The Church of the Visitation in Seremban relishes the treasured legacy of pioneering French missionaries who introduced Catholicism in Kuala Lumpur and surrounding region in the 19th century.

The first and oldest Church in Kuala Lumpur became a springboard of evangelization following the arrival of French missionary priest Father Pierre Favre from Paris Foreign Mission Society (MEP). Before settling down in Seremban he carried out missionary activities in the area from hismission station in Malacca.

The Interior of the Church

The church at Jalan Yam Tuan began as a small chapel and gained parish status in 1848. The present churchwas constructed in 1889.The name Visitation refers to Virgin Mary’s visitation to her cousin Elizabeth just like the visits of French missionary priests to Catholic community in early days who came here from Malacca and Singapore.

The stained-glass windows are unique features of the church, supplemented with other sites like the presbytery, Visitation Hall, and Formation Centers. The Church of Visitation is one of the most beautiful religious sites in Seremban.

The Church with its 12,000 parishioners is a multicultural melting pot. Four languages - English, Tamil, Mandarin and Bahasa Malaysia – are widely spoken in the parish territory. All church activities including liturgy and catechesis are conducted in four languages. Thus, the Visitation parish has become a model of cultural and ethnic harmony.

The Church of the Visitation with the statue of Visitation of Mary and a cross mounted on a triangular façade, in the midst of the greenery of palm trees, is an enchanting site for visitors.
