~ Pope Francis said in his homily of the Mass at the Vatican on March 14, formally opening the yearlong celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of Catholicism’s arrival in the Philippines.

In a land area of 30,800 square kilometers, the diocesan territory covers civil districts of Nellore and Prakasam.

Population

The population is 7,689,000 as of June 2016.

Political

The main political parties are the Congress Party, Telugu Desam (regional party) and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Transportation

Buses of the State Road Transport Corporation and railway are the modes of transportation.

Economy

There are no major industries in the diocesan area except handloom sector which is a small scale industry.

The main crops are paddy, sugarcane, cotton and tobacco. The per capita income in the diocesan territory is: Rs 11,381 ($285) as of February. 2008.

Nellore district is also known for aqua farming. The district is called the "shrimp capital of India."
