Archdiocese of Gandhinagar

Archdiocese of Gandhinagar

Gandhinagar is the capital city of Gujarat and one of the greenest capital cities in the world. It was in 1960 that Gujarat was established as a separate state from Bombay Province. Its original capital was Ahmedabad, but it later became Gandhinagar. The Church in Gandhinagar is relatively new with almost all the Christians being second or first generation. The Catholics here are mainly migrants, most of whom work in the government sector. The Unteshwari Mata shrine, one of the Marian shrines here, is a pilgrimage center where thousands throng each year for its annual dance festival.

Gujarati is the main language spoken. Along with it, one can also find people speaking Bhili, English, Konkani, Malayalam and Tamil.

Generally pleasant. The area has many trees and relatively little pollution. Gandhinagar's temperature is always two to three degrees lower than its neighboring districts'.

Spread around 29,942 square kilometers covering the districts of Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Patan, Banaskantha and Sabarkantha.
