On Aug. 21, 2007, Cardinal Varkey Vithayathil, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, erected the new Diocese of Bhadravathi by separating the civil district of Shimoga from the territory of the Diocese of Mananthavady, after having obtained the consent of the Synod of the Bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church and the assent of Pope Benedict XVI. He likewise appointed Father Joseph Arumachadath, MCBS as its first bishop.

The diocese serves an area of 10,553 square kilometers with a total population of 1,639,595 of which 6,000 are Syro-Malabar Catholics. There are at present 13 parishes and 6 mission stations in the diocese. Of the 26 priests serving the diocese, Protosyncellus Msgr. George Njaralakatt is from the diocese of Mananthavady; chancellor and finance officer Father Francis Allumpurath is from the Mananthavady Norbertine community; 22 belong to the Missionary Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament; and one each belong to the Missionary Society of St. Thomas and the Capuchins.

Eight Religious congregations are involved in ministry through 14 educational institutions, 6 balabhavan (orphanages), 12 health-care institutions and other social and developmental activities under the Malanad Social Service Society, the official diocesan agency for social work. These congregations have 91 members living in the diocese in 24 Religious houses -- 6 of men and 18 of women.
