Bishop Stefano Scarella was the first bishop of Vicariate Apostolic of Northern Honan and the cathedral was at Fanjialing village in Hui county. In 1900, the cathedral was destroyed by boxers during the Boxer Uprising. The cathedral was moved subsequently to Tinjiajing village and Xiaozhuang village in Lin county as well as to Weihuifu city. Since the Cathedral was in Weihuifu for a longer period of time, Vicariate Apostolic of Northern Honan was renamed to Vicariate Apostolic of Weihuifu in 1924. The Vicariate Apostolic was elevated to Diocese of Weihuifu in 1946.

In 1952, the cathedral was moved again to Anyang and thus, the diocese is also called Anyang. After the Communist took rule in the 1950s, foreign missionaries were forced to leave the diocese and expelled from China. Along with the Cultural Revolution (1966-1977), religious life of local people was suspended.

By the end of 1980s, religious activities revived with the implementation of government's religious policy. Priests and nuns returned to Church from their homes and the problem of church's property was gradually resolved.
