The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Religious Institutes of Women

  • Daughters of Our Lady of China :The congregation was founded by Bishop Yang in May 1996, and there were 11 nuns to start the community. In 2005, 5 nuns made their perpetual vow.
  • Holy Family Sisters :The congregation was first founded in 1910 in Yanzhou Diocese, Shandong province, and later spread to Henan and Gansu provinces. In September 2009, Bishop Han consecrated the new convent, and presided at the ceremony of 6 nuns making their vow.
  • Missionary Sisters Servants of the Holy Spirit :The congregation began in China in 1905 in Shandong. In 1924, the nuns came to Gansu and started orphanages, schools and clinics.
