Cardinal John Tong Hon was born in Hong Kong on July 31, 1939, and was ordained a priest on January 6, 1966, at the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception in Hong Kong. He became a Vicar General in the year 1992 and was appointed the Auxiliary Bishop of Hong Kong on September 13, 1996. He later became the Coadjutor Bishop of Hong Kong on January 30, 2008.
He succeeded Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, a Salesian, on April 15, 2009, the day on which Pope Benedict XVI accepted the resignation of Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-kiun from the pastoral care of the Diocese of Hong Kong.
Pope Benedict XVI announced the elevation of Bishop Tong to the rank of Cardinal on January 6, 2012. The Ordinary Public Consistory, the official ceremony of elevation, took place on February 18, 2012, in the Vatican. He retired as the Bishop of Hong Kong on August 1, 2017.
On January 5, 2019, Cardinal Tong was appointed by the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, as the Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Hong Kong, with the responsibility of governing it, following the death of Bishop Michael Yeung Ming-cheung on January 3, 2019.
