Cardinal Francis Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij was born on June 27, 1949, in Bang Rak, Bangkok. He was ordained a priest on July 11, 1976. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him bishop of Nakhon Sawan on March 7, 2007. He was ordained Bishop on June 2, 2007.

Pope Francis named him cardinal on Jan. 4, 2015.

From 2003 until his appointment as bishop, he was parish priest of the Assumption Cathedral and secretary of the council of priests of the Archdiocese of Bangkok and was appointed Archbishop of Bangkok on May 14, 2009, His installation took place on Aug. 16, 2009. From 2007-2009, he served as president of the Episcopal Commission for Pastoral Care of the Christians and Catholic Commission for the Liturgy.
