Anthony Yao Shun was born in December 1965 in Ulanqab. He pursued his priestly studies at the National Seminary in Beijing, China, and was ordained priest on May 19, 1991. Father Yao Shun specialized in liturgy at Saint John’s University in Collegeville, U.S, during 1994-98 and later devoted himself to Biblical studies in Jerusalem. He returned to the diocese in 2010.
He served as the Spiritual Director of National Seminary during the 1990’s, and has been an integral part of the liturgical commission, which is dependent on the Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association and the Council of Chinese Bishops. He has been the Secretary of the liturgical commission from 1998-2004, and has been serving currently as the Vice Director of the commission since 2004.
Father Yao Shun was elected by church members as the Bishop of the Diocese of Jining on April 9, 2019, and was ordained Bishop on August 26, 2019.
Although he is the first ordained bishop since the Sino-Vatican Provisional Agreement signed in 2018, Bishop Yao was actually secretly approved by the Vatican in 2010.
