The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Joseph Yang Yongqiang was born in 1970 to a Catholic family in Boxing county, which was regarded as a cradle of vocations. He was ordained a priest in 1995 after graduating from Sheshan seminary in Shanghai the same year. He returned to Zhoucun the following year and served as parish priest.

He was assigned to teach at the Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Jinan, provincial capital of Shandong in 2005 and at the same time, to work for the provincial Catholic Patriotic Association and Church Affairs Committee. He was nominated by Bishop Ma and elected unanimously as the bishop candidate in late 2009. He was ordained with Vatican-approval on Nov. 15, 2010. Bishop of Zhoucun on 08.02.2013.
