Bishop John Wang Renlei was born on June 5, 1970 in the neighboring Shandong province. He studied at Sheshan Regional Seminary in Shanghai 1989-1992. He was ordained a priest in 1996 and furthered his studies at the National Seminary in Beijing until 1999. In 2001, he was appointed vicar general of Xuzhou. He was ordained coadjutor bishop of Xuzhou by Bishop Joseph Zhao Fengchang of Yanggu (Liaocheng) without papal mandate on May 18, 2011 to succeed his nonagenarian predecessor Bishop Thomas Qian Yurong, which passed away on March 22, 2013. The Holy See recognized him as legitimate bishop in early 2012.
