The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Stephanus Tri Buu Thien was born in Hau Giang province on Feb. 15, 1950. He was ordained a priest for Can Tho diocese on July 22, 1987. Bishop Thien then furthered his studies in Rome from 1994 to 1998 and obtained a doctorate in moral theology from the Pontifical Urbaniana University. He was ordained coadjutor bishop of Can Tho diocese on Feb. 18, 2003.He succeded Bishop Emmanuel Le Phong Thuan on Oct 17, 2010.
