Bishop Thomas Tharayil was ordained auxiliary bishop of Changanacherry April 23, 2017.

He was born on Feb. 2, 1972 at Changanacherry and joined the minor seminary in Kurichy, and had his theological studies at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathur, Kottayam.

He was ordained priest on Jan. 1, 2000. He holds a doctorate in psychology and become popular as a retreat preacher and psychologist. A polyglot, he is proficient in English, Italian, Spanish, and German.

Bishop Tharayil was elected auxiliary bishop at the week-long Syro Malabar Synod held at St. Thomas Mount at Kakkanad from Jan 9, 2017. As the oriental canon law prescribes, his appointment comes with prior papal permission.
