The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Paul Su Yongda was born on July 6, 1958, in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. He entered the Central and Southern China Theological and Philosophical Seminary in Wuhan, Hubei province, on May 19, 1985. He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1991, and was assigned to the parish of St. Victor's Church in Zhanjiang city, which also serves as the cathedral of Zhanjiang diocese.

He was elected as diocesan administrator in March 2003 and was ordained Bishop of Zhanjiang with Papal Mandate on Nov 9, 2004. Bishop Su is the second bishop of the diocese, succeeding Bishop Joseph Chen Chu (1995-2003) who died on March 19, 2003, at the age of 81.
