Pope Francis named Bishop Nazarene Soosai as the bishop Kottar on May 20, 2017. He was member of the diocesan college of consultors and secretary of the council of priests at the time of appointment.
Bishop Soosai was born in Rajakkalamangalamthurai in Kottar on April 13, 1963. Following studies at the St. Aloysius’ Minor Seminary in Nagercoil and philosophy and theology studies at the Sacred Heart Seminary in Poonamallee, Chennai, he was ordained priest for Kottar in 1989.
He holds a licenciate in theology from the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium and a doctorate in theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He also has a master’s degree in political science from the University of Madurai.
He served the diocese in various capacities starting as assistant parish priest of Our Lady of Presentation Church, Colachel (1989-1990).
