St. Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived on Kerala’s Malabar Coast in 52 AD, is considered the father of the Catholic faith in India.

Christian communities developed and expanded further when European missionaries arrived in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Auxiliary Bishop Maxwell Silva was born on Sept. 27,1953, at Willorawatte, in the archdiocese of Colombo. He was ordained a priest on July 25, 1981.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the Auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of Colombo on Nov. 28, 2011.

The Auxiliary Bishop obtained a Bachelor Degree and a Post-Graduate Diploma in Science of Education from the University of Kelaniya, as well as a Master of Science in Sociology from the same University.

Since 2001 until present, he is the Rector of St. Thomas College, Kotte in the archdiocese of Colombo.
