Pope Francis on Dec. 30, 2014 appointed Father John Saw Yaw Han the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Yangon.
The 46-year old priest's new position was announced four days before Archbishop Charles Bo of Yangon was named a cardinal.
The new auxiliary bishop was rector of the major seminary of Yangon at the time of appointment.
Born on May 5 1968 in Homalim village, the newly named prelate has a bachelor’s degree in geography from Bago College, in Yangon.
He did his philosophy and theology studies at the National Major Seminary of St. Joseph, in Mandalay and Yangon.
Following his priestly ordination on March 18, 1995, he was a parish priest and a missioner until 1998, when he joined Philosophy Major Seminary to teach.
In 2002 he left for Higher studies in USA and when returned in 2004 joined the ?National Major Seminary (Theology) in Yangon as its professor. In 2008 he was appointed its rector, a post he continued until appointed auxiliary bishop.
