The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Vincent Samuel was born on Aug. 10, 1950, in Arayoor in Kerala state. He was ordained priest on Dec. 19, 1975. Bishop Samuel has served in many parishes of the Neyyattinkara and Trivandrum dioceses. He obtained a doctorate in systematic theology in 1987 from Urban University, Rome. Bishop Samuel has served as professor in St. Joseph's Pontifical Major Seminary, Alwaye and was appointed its vice rector in 1994. When diocese of Neyyattinkara was erected by Pope John Paul II on June 14, 1996, he was appointed as its first bishop.
