The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Khalid Rehmat O.F.M. Cap. was born on Aug. 5, 1968, in Mianwali in the Diocese of Islamabad-Rawalpindi. On Jan. 1, 2021, Pope Francis named him as the new vicar apostolic of Quetta.

He made the solemn profession in 2007 and was ordained priest on Aug. 16, 2008, in the Sacred Heart Cathedral, Lahore.

Bishop Rehmat worked as a primary school teacher before joining the Capuchin order. From 2008 to 2014 he taught at St. Mary's Minor Seminary, Lahore.

Bishop Rehmat also served as parish priest in Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish in Sialkot, in the Archdiocese of Lahore. Since 2013, he has been editor of the bimonthly magazine Catholic Naqeeb.

In November 2020, he was elected Custos of the 'Mariam Siddeeqa Capuchin Custody' in Pakistan.

He is the first Pakistani Capuchin priest to be named bishop and was consecrated on March 25, 2021.
