The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Pope Francis has appointed Rev. Cosme Damian Racines Almedilla as the new bishop of the Diocese of Butuan on March 25, 2019.

Bishop Cosme was born in Capayas in 1959.

Bishop Almedilla is the third bishop of the Butuan diocese, succeeding Most Rev. Juan de Dios Pueblos who passed away in October 2017.

He was ordained a priest on August 4, 1987 after his formation at Saint John XXIII College Seminary in Malaybalay City in Bukidnon and at the Loyola School of Theology at Ateneo de Manila University.
