Pope Francis appointed Reverend Anthony Bernard Paul as the bishop of Melaka-Johor on Nov. 19, 2015.

His appointment came after the pope accepted the resignation of Jesuit Bishop Paul Tan Chee Ing of Melaka-Johor in accordance with canon 401 § 1 of the Code of Canon Law.

Reverend Paul was parish priest of the Cathedral and Vicar for Pastoral Care of the Diocese Penang at the time of appointment.

Reverend Paul was born July 6, 1953 in Alor Star in Penang and entered seminary and later worked briefly as a teacher in a local school. He studied philosophy and theology at the major seminary in Penang and was ordained a priest July 21, 1989 for the diocese of Penang.

He was assistant priest of St. Francis Xavier in Melaka, parish priests of St. Mary in Tapah and of the Nativity of the BVM Parish in Butterworth.

During 1996-1997 he was also diocesan director for vocations and then became the Vicar General of Penang in 2012.
