The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop John Nellikunnel was born on March 22, 1973, at Kadaplamattom, Kerala. He joined St. Joseph’s Minor Seminary, Kothamangalam, on June 18, 1988. He completed philosophical and theological studies from St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, from 1991 to 1998. He was ordained priest on Dec. 30, 1998. He has served as assistant vicar in St. Sebastian Church, Nedumkandam, Infant Jesus Church, Kombayar and St. Mary’s Church, Manjapetty. He obtained a licentiate in philosophy from Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome (2001-2003) and a doctorate in philosophy from Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rome (2003-2006).

From 2007 to 2010 he served as eparchial chancellor and secretary to the bishop. In 2010, he was appointed resident staff at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Mangalapuzha. From 2015 to 2017 he was dean of philosophy at Mangalapuzha seminary.
