The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Jacob Manathodath was born on Feb. 22, 1947 at Kodamthuruthu. He joined the Sacred Heart Minor Seminary, Ernakulam. Two years later Bishop Manathodath was sent to the Papal Seminary, Pune, where achieved a licentiate in philosophy and master's degree in theology. He was ordained priest on Nov. 4, 1972. He has a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University, Rome. Bishop Manathodath was first appointed assistant vicar of St. Mary's Cathedral Basilica, Ernakulam and then private secretary to the late Mar Joseph Cardinal Parecattil. After his return from Rome in 1984, he served the archdiocese of Ernakulam in various capacities like archdiocesan secretary, secretary to Mar Antony Cardinal Padiyara, and the editor of "Ernakulam Missam". In 1990, he was appointed professor at St. Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Aluva.

He was ordained bishop on Nov. 28, 1992. Pope John Paul II appointed him bishop of Palghat on Nov. 11, 1996. He took canonical possession of the eparchy on Feb. 1, 1997.
