The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Bishop Paul Ma Cunguo is the third bishop of Shuozhou diocese in northern Shanxi province. He was born in 1971. He entered the diocesan minor seminary in 1988 and then the Shanxi Montecorvino Major Seminary in 1991. Ordained a priest in 1996, he did pastoral work in parishes until his predecessor Bishop Bonaventure Luo Juan appointed him vicar general in 2002 and ordained him coadjutor bishop on Feb. 8, 2004. Since the episcopal ordination did not go through the "open" Church structure's procedure of "self-election and self-ordination", the government does not recognize Bishop Ma, who has a papal mandate. The authorities also criticized he was too young (then 33 year old) to meet the canonical requirement that a bishop must be above 35.
