The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

John Baptist Li Suguang was born to a Catholic family in Changzi in 1964. He pursued his priestly studies at the Beijing Diocesan Seminary, and was later ordained priest on August 22, 1992. He became the vicar general in 1999, and was elected the Coadjutor Bishop of the Diocese of Nanchang in Jiangxi Province, in July 2009. Several underground Catholics attended his ordination as Coadjutor Bishop, an event which took place on October 31, 2010, with Bishop Joseph Li Shan of Beijing as the consecrator. Father Li was made the Bishop of the Diocese of Nanchang on August 24, 2014.
