The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

Pope Francis on January 16, 2016 acknowledged the appointment of Msgr. Stephen Lee Sang Bun as new bishop of Macau.

Bishop Stephen Lee Bun-sang was born on November 10, 1956 in Hong Kong. He attended University in England, first at the Oxford Polytechnic (1976-1977) and then at the School of Architecture in London, and obtained a degree in architecture in 1981. During his university years he experienced the spirituality of Opus Dei.

After his studies he worked as an assistant at the John Harris Architects studio in London and later in the office in Hong Kong.

Soon he decided to leave work and enter the Seminary for philosophical and theological studies in Hong Kong and in Rome at the Collegio Romano della Santa Croce. He was ordained a priest on 20 August 1988. He is incardinated in the Personal Prelature of the Holy Cross and of Opus Dei.

In 1990 he obtained a doctorate in canon law at the University of Navarra on the theme: Relaciones Iglesia-Estado en the Republica Popular China.

After a brief pastoral experience in the Philippines, he returned to Hong Kong, where he served in a number of pastoral and administrative roles. He was nominated by Pope Francis as the Auxiliary Bishop for the Diocese of Hong Kong on July 11, 2014.

As auxiliary bishop he coordinated the pastoral family, the school pastoral, catechesis, the formation of the laity, the Diocesan Committee on Bioethics, the Liturgical Commission, as well as the diocesan office of communications. He speaks Cantonese, Mandarin, English and Spanish.
