The Church in Asia lost two cardinals in less than two months this year.

Cardinal Cornelius Sim, a new cardinal in Asia and the first of Brunei, died on May 29. He was 69.

Cardinal Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, 89, former archbishop of Seoul and president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea, passed away on April 27.

The announcement of Father Joseph Kodakallil as the new bishop of Satna was made on July, 22, 2015.

A priest of Satna diocese, he was its vicar general at the time of appointment.

Bishop Kodakallil was born on Dec. 18, 1965, at Upputhode, in the eparchy of Kothamangalam. He did the Minor Seminary at Deepti Bhavan, Palai, and Christu Vidhya Niketan, Rewa.

Then he joined St. Albert’s College, Ranchi, for philosophy and St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary in Vadavathoor, Kerala, for theology. He was ordained priest on Dec. 31, 1991 for the eparchy of Satna.

From 2001 to 2006 he studied in Rome at the Pontifical Oriental Institute, where he obtained a doctorate.

He served as professor and vice-rector of St. Ephrem’s Theological College, Satna, Protosyncellus at Bishop’s House, Satna. At time of appointment as bishop, he was parish priest of the Cathedral Church in Satna.
