St. Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived on Kerala’s Malabar Coast in 52 AD, is considered the father of the Catholic faith in India.

Christian communities developed and expanded further when European missionaries arrived in the 13th and 14th centuries.

Bishop Yoohanon Mar Theodosius Kochuthundil was born on April 8, 1959, at Puthussery Bhagon, Kerala. After attending Minor Seminary of Trivandrum, he completed ecclesiastical studies at St Joseph's Pontifical Seminary, Aluva, and was ordained priest on Dec. 22, 1985. He has a doctorate in canon law from Rome’s Pontifical Oriental Institute.

He has served as parish priest, secretary of the archbishop of Trivandrum and rector of Minor Seminary.

On Aug. 5, 2017, he was elected bishop of the curia of the major archdiocese of the Syro-Malankara Church and on Sept. 21 of the same year he was consecrated bishop. He is the apostolic visitor for the Syrian-Malankara faithful residing in Europe and Oceania. He took charge as the co-adjutor bishop of the eparchy of Muvattupuzha on April 12, 2018. On June 12, 2019, he was appointed the second eparchial bishop of Muvattupuzha.
