St. Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived on Kerala’s Malabar Coast in 52 AD, is considered the father of the Catholic faith in India.

Christian communities developed and expanded further when European missionaries arrived in the 13th and 14th centuries.

The history of a few ancient dioceses in Asia can be dated back to 13th century pre-Portuguese mission expeditions.

Bishop Felix Lian Khen Thang was born on Dec. 25, 1959 at Gamngai, Tedim Township, in Northern Chin State. He was baptized on June 9, 1967. He studied at Pyinoolwin St. Aloysius Minor Seminary until he passed high school. He made his philosophical and theological studies at St. Joseph Catholic Major Seminary, Yangon. He was ordained a priest on Feb. 24, 1990 and was appointed a parish priest of Holy Rosary parish, Saizang, in Tedim Township till 1992. While he was a parish priest there, the local ordinary chose him to go to Rome for further studies which he has completed in 1997 with a degree of doctorate on Canon Law. At the same time he has undergone Diplomatic Courses at Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome. He was sent to Madagascar as Secretary of the Nuncio where he served the Church from 1997 to 1998. Then he was transferred to Bangladesh in 1998 where he remained till 2001. Again he was transferred to Morocco in 2001 to serve the Church there until he resigned from this service for health reasons in 2004. He came back to Hakha Diocese, Myanmar and on March 3, 2006 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as Auxiliary Bishop of Hakha Diocese. He was ordained bishop on May 6, that year. On May 22, 2010, Bishop Felix was appointed Bishop of Kalay.

Pope Benedict XVI established Kalay diocese on May 22, that year with territory taken from Hakha diocese, making it a suffragan of Mandalay archdiocese and appointed Bishop Felix to be the ordinary of new diocese. The installation was held in bishop's house compound, Kalay on June, 29, 2010.

The bishop speaks Burmese and Tedim chin dialets.
