Celebrating the 500th Anniversary of Catholicism in the Philippines

And this joy is evident in your people … We see it in your eyes, on your faces, in your songs and in your prayers. In the joy with which you bring your faith to other lands …”

~ Pope Francis said in his homily of the Mass at the Vatican on March 14, formally opening the yearlong celebrations marking the 500th anniversary of Catholicism’s arrival in the Philippines.

A country of 7,641 islands at the sea of southeast Asia with a population of 109 million, of which more than 10 million are migrants living in almost 100 countries across the world.

Bishop Pauly Kannookadan was born on Feb. 14, 1961. He hails from the parish of St. Mary’s Church Kuzhikattussery of the eparchy of Irinjalakuda.

Bishop Kannookadan joined St. Mary’s Petit Seminary, Thope, Thrissur. He had his philosophical and theological formation at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor, Kottayam. He was ordained priest on Dec. 28, 1985. After serving as assistant parish priest at St. Thomas Cathedral, Irinjalakuda, Bishop Kannookadan was sent to Rome for higher studies and obtained a doctorate in the oriental liturgy from the Pontifical Oriental Institute, Rome.

Bishop Kannookadan has served as vicar in various parishes of the eparchy. He has also served as visiting professor of liturgy in major seminaries in Mangalapuram, Alwaye and Poonamallee. Bishop Kannookadan is a prolific ecclesiastical writer.
